Saule' (2007)

Saule' is a Baltic Goddess of the sun (Lithuania/Latvia). She is considered one of the most powerful gods, the Mother of planets. Saule' married the moon and then divorced him, the original independent woman. She is known for unconditional motherly love shining equally on all; she is associated with weaving, healing, and amber. Besides all the above remarkable qualities, I was drawn to Saule' as a name for this piece for my own personal reasons: my own history and that of my predecessors. Besides, I wasn’t about to name one of my creations after some male deity.

Saule' was inspired while I was sitting in stopped traffic, staring at the round brake light in front of me. I had enough time to free-extrapolate this sculpture idea from that brake light that day. Sometimes it pays to appreciate a small moment. Saule' is a multi-layered piece, incorporating spot-welded stainless steel wire and mesh, abraded woven and braided fiber optic cables illuminated by red, orange and amber 5mm LEDs.
